The Wild Grapevine
山葡萄について
山葡萄は主に日本や東アジアの『奥山』という、野生動物が多く生息する人を寄せ付けないような標高の高い山林に自生し、他の樹木に蔓（つる）を絡ませて生長する蔓性植物です。
その蔓の表皮は強度と柔軟性が非常に高く、籠作りにおいて古くから親しまれてきたとても魅力的な素材の一つですが、自生する環境や採取の方法、限られた時期にしか採取できないため、籠の原料としては希少な素材です。
Native to high-altitude, untouched forests inhabited by wildlife, Yamabudo is a rare, highly resilient wild grapevine that climbs around deep mountain trees. Due to its perilous harvest and limited gathering season, this exceptionally strong, flexible bark has been treasured since ancient times as a charming, rare material for premium traditional basketry.

However, as a climbing vine, Yamabudo can wrap tightly around other trees, hindering forest growth and posing a challenge for forestry. To maintain a healthy ecosystem, we carefully select and thin out these vines, restoring natural balance. Rather than taking from nature, we harvest with a vision of coexistence, protecting the forest while sharing in its bounty.

Yama-BIko Basketは、国や自治体の正式な採取許可のもと、国有林や県有林で森の保全活動の一環として山葡萄の蔓の採取を行っています。
蔓の乱獲や、山を荒らすような行き過ぎた採取のない国有林・県有林には多くの良質な山葡萄の蔓が豊かに生長しています。
国や自治体と連携し、森の成長を妨げる蔓を見極めて採取を行い、植生環境の保 全と良質な蔓の採取の両立を実現し、共に生きていくものづくりの形を大切にしています。
With official permits, Yama-BIko Basket harvests wild grapevine bark as part of forest conservation in Japan’s state and prefectural forests. Protected from over-harvesting, these managed public lands are home to an abundance of premium vines. Partnering with local authorities, we remove only the vines that hinder tree growth. This allows us to balance ecological preservation with the sourcing of exceptional materials, embracing a sustainable craftsmanship where humans and nature live in harmony.
