The Japanese people of ancient times created the art of weaving and making baskets from wild grapes. Yama-Biko is a brand that inherits this traditional culture that is being forgotten. We deliver new values to these tradition and resources, and resonate widely throughout the world.
Natural Materials
天然素材の魅力
籠には天然素材の中でも強度や柔軟性が高く、その特性をそのまま籠に活かすことができる山葡萄の蔓の樹皮を使用します。土から生まれ、土に還る天然素材には無駄や浪費がなく、持続可能な原料として地球とヒトの未来を考えるうえでとても魅力的な存在です。
また、この山葡萄は、林業に携わる者にとっては木々を枯らす厄介者とされており、この厄介者に新たな価値を与えてアップサイクルを生み出すことも山葡萄を素材として選ぶ理由のひとつです。
Our baskets are crafted from Yamabudo bark, a natural resource celebrated for its exceptional strength and flexibility. As a fully biodegradable material born from the earth and returning to it, it offers a zero-waste, sustainable choice for our future. Furthermore, by transforming this vine—often considered a threat to forestry—into a luxurious heirloom, we give it a second life through beautiful upcycling.

With official permits, Yama-BIko Basket harvests wild grapevine bark as part of forest conservation in Japan’s state and prefectural forests. Protected from over-harvesting, these managed public lands are home to an abundance of premium vines. Partnering with local authorities, we remove only the vines that hinder tree growth. This allows us to balance ecological preservation with the sourcing of exceptional materials, embracing a sustainable craftsmanship where humans and nature live in harmony.

山葡萄籠は使い込むほどに持ち主の手の脂を得て深味のある色と光沢を纏い、柔軟性を増して経年変化し、自分だけのモノへと育てることができるカバンです。
また、職人が作る山葡萄籠は適切なメンテナンスを行い大切に扱っていただくことで親から子へ、子から孫へと受け継げるほど永くお使いいただけることも大きな特徴です。不意に破損した場合でも修理が可能なため、長期間に渡りお使いいただけます。
The more you use a Yamabudo basket, the more it absorbs the natural oils from your hands, developing a deep amber color and beautiful gloss. With simple care, it lasts for generations—from parent to child and grandchild. It can always be repaired, remaining your own unique item for over a century.

Harvesting
素材の採取
梅雨の時期が終わる頃、奥山という人里離れた山中で逞しく自生する蔓を採取します。採取する蔓の大きさ（直径）には一定の基準を設け、基準値に満たない蔓はむやみに採取せず、翌年以降に先延ばすことで種を枯渇させない工夫や、伐採した以上の植林を行いながら天然の恵を分けてもらいます。
At the end of the rainy season, we gather mature vines from deep forests. To preserve resources, small vines under our strict standard are left to grow for future years. We always plant more than we cut, maintaining the forest as we receive its seasonal bounty.

Preparing the Strips
ひごづくり
まっすぐなもの、曲がったもの、捻れたもの。天然素材の山葡萄の蔓には、一本一本に性格があり、柔らかくしなやかにするための鞣し（なめし）と削りの加工作業を経て均 等な太さと厚みに切り揃えたヒゴを作ります。この工程はカゴ作りにおける最も重要な工程であり、完成の出来を大きく左右する、職人の技術が問われる工程でもあります。
Some are straight, some curved, and others twisted. Each wild grapevine possesses its own distinct personality. Through careful softening, shaving, and trimming, we shape the vine into strips of uniform width and thickness. This is the most critical stage of basketry—a test of true craftsmanship that decides the final beauty of the basket.

Weaving the Basket
編み上げ
ヒゴを縦横に交錯させて籠の底部から編み、木型に巻き付けながら丁寧に隙間を埋めて編んでいきます。乾燥させたヒゴを水に漬けて柔らかくし、編んではまた乾燥させて。この工程を 何度も繰り返して作業を進めるのでひとつの籠を編みあげるまでに多くの時間を必要としますが、ひとつひとつの籠を丁寧に、丈夫で永く愛される山葡萄籠を製作しています。
We weave from the bottom, crossing strips around a wooden mold to fill every gap. The dried strips are soaked to soften, woven, and dried again. Repeating this slow cycle takes time, but it ensures each handcrafted basket is exceptionally strong and loved for a lifetime.
